District 6 - Where San Francisco lives and works

San Francisco’s District 6 is home to the most economically diverse populations in our city. Our district stretches from Civic Center (and a bit of Hayes Valley), parts of the North Mission, lower Potrero Hill, Mission Bay, South Beach, East SOMA, SOMA, West SOMA, Tenderloin, Lower Polk, and Treasure Island. From the hills to the Bay, our district is ground zero for major development planned into our city’s future. Land use issues are constant and huge – not just in size (as District 6 is home of nearly a dozen planned high rises) but in terms of economic impact. The dramatic increase in real estate over the past few decades has displaced low income communities and small businesses in mass. In this economic downturn, we are feeling the effects of the questionable land-use decisions of the past. We need a supervisor who knows land use and works creatively to bring about smart, supportive and sustainable development.

Our District will lead San Francisco’s recovery. We will only lead the recovery if we use our strength – our small community serving small businesses. Our small business community needs the attention of City Hall. We need to encourage and support these businesses by providing an across-the-board incentive program for direct job creation; strengthening the physical buildings to prevent earthquake damage; and utilizing our Convention and Visitors Bureau efforts to promote our city’s small businesses around the state. This will also help anchor our residential neighborhoods, providing much needed economic stimulus to help pay for street amenities, public benefits – all the things residents need to provide safe and exciting places to live for themselves and their families.
